Get Started!

Have you ever had something to do and found yourself unable to get started? You feel overwhelmed at just the thought of it. This can include the mundane, repetitive tasks like doing a sink load of dishes or a tower of laundry. But it can also happen when we need to declutter or clean out the garage or even finish bigger projects like doing our taxes or tasks at work.

Experts advise us to start small. They say that just about any project a person puts off can either be brought closer to completion or accomplished altogether by using this certain method. I have found this little trick to help me every time I use it, and I encourage you to try it as well. 

  • Set a timer for 15 minutes.

  • When the timer begins, do nothing but the desired project for 15 minutes straight uninterrupted. Tell your children or family members you're unavailable until the timer goes off. (Always keep an eye on small children😉)

  • Work quickly and methodically. If the task can be done in a short time, try to beat the timer.

  • When the timer goes off, you will be surprised at how much you were able to get accomplished and may even have the energy and motivation to complete the task even though the 15 minutes is over.

  • If you have time, set the timer again for another 15 minutes until the project is finished since you're on a roll!

  • If you must stop, schedule a day/time to work another 15 minutes since you were able to get a big chunk of it done instead of putting it off again.

  • Finally, reward yourself for getting started by doing something you would have done instead of working on this project.

Why does this work? Because the key to getting things done is very simple:  You must start!

Even if you don't finish in the 15 minutes, at least now you have begun the project and it is not looming over your head causing guilt and self-criticism. Many times projects or chores can cause resentment because as humans we desire to be lazy and self-satisfying. This is certainly true of me as I can always find excuses to let myself off the hook. I would much rather find some other way to fill my time. However, the Bible says:

The desire accomplished is sweet to the soul. ~ Proverbs 13:19 

You will find yourself much more pleasant when you are completing tasks and getting things done. Hard work is good for the body and soul and makes us happier. I want to do everything I can to be a loveable woman. This is one way to help me destress, to feel more free, and to enjoy my life more. 

 

Let's start using this "15 minute timer" trick on a regular basis and see how much we can accomplish. You will feel so much better and believe things can get done...15 minutes at a time!!! Stop putting things off...GET STARTED today!

The Healing Plant Called Aloe Vera

As a native Floridian, I have had and seen my fair share of sunburns. When hosting guests, we always suggest for them to be careful in the Florida sun because just a few minutes in direct sunlight can cause a hurtful sunburn, especially for those not used to it. They’ll often say, “We’re out in the sun all the time at home and have never gotten burned like this before.” This is because Florida is closer to the equator making the heat from the sun more intense. One way to be careful is to check the heat index on a weather app.

As a kid I can remember my mom keeping a bottle of green Aloe Vera gel in our refrigerator which I now do for my family. This is a must have for Florida sunburns or any type of burn really and can be found at most stores. 

 

However, I have also found the amazing soothing therapy that comes from a real aloe plant like the one pictured above. These plants are inexpensive and do not require much care when planted in your yard. 

 

When needed, simply cut a branch of the aloe plant & put it in the refrigerator. The colder the aloe gel, the more the relief. Make a slice down the middle of the stem and the gel can be put directly onto the burn using your finger or a cotton swab. 

 

What an aloe plant does:

  • Soothes the burn naturally  

  • Because there are no additives, it is pure aloe speeding up the healing time and intensifying the comfort.

  • Adds a protective layer on the skin to provide protection from further damage.

 

Recently I used an aloe plant to treat a bad burn and I was amazed at the recovery time and the way it prevented bad scaring. It makes me think of how God ministers healing into our wounds and how we can help others by pointing them to Jesus. It's like the story in the Bible of the Good Samaritan who helped the injured man on the side of the road when he "bound up his wounds, pouring in oil...and took care of him." 

When I think of the difference between using the real aloe plant versus store-bought aloe, I think of how there are many imitations to real joy and happiness. While some pleasures or people may come close, nothing is as comforting as knowing we have a Heavenly Father who ministers His healing balm to the hurt, pain and challenges of this life like only He can do.

 

God promises in Psalm 147:3 that "He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds." He is the "Balm of Gilead." We need to go to God for healing. There is a beloved song about this healing that can be found in Jesus Christ: 

 

There is a balm in Gilead

To make the wounded whole;

There is a balm in Gilead

To heal the sin-sick soul.

Jesus is the Balm of Gilead. You will be amazed at how God can heal your wounds and put you back together if you give Him all the pieces.

- A Christmas Tradition Idea -

“Bake a Birthday Cake for Jesus”

At Christmas time when I was a college student, I heard a group of children sing the Christmas song entitled, “Happy Birthday, Jesus!” The lyrics explained that Christmas gifts and decorations are nice, but the real gift is Jesus. The message and mood of that song truly moved me, and I knew I wanted to incorporate it into my Christmas traditions. 

Then when I had a child of my own, I began thinking of other traditions I wanted to be weaved into our new little family dynamic. I realized that I couldn’t wait to teach and share with my children about life and happiness and especially about Jesus! So from the inspiration of that children’s song I had heard years before, I asked my mom if we could decorate her traditional Christmas cake we have every year with birthday decorations. We decided to use gel icing and write Jesus’ name on the cake and even added candles. The first year we established that tradition I rocked my baby girl in my arms as we sang, “Happy Birthday” to Jesus. 

 

As we’ve added more children and cousins to our family, we still gather around each Christmas and celebrate the birth of Jesus by baking a birthday cake just for Him and blowing out the candles at the end of the birthday song.

 

What tradition can you incorporate at Christmas time to celebrate Jesus and His free gift of Heaven? Be sure to teach your children the true meaning of Christmas and maybe one day they’ll pass on these same traditions to their family.

There’s not much that seems to smell more like home than a batch of chocolate chip cookie baking in the oven. When I was little, there was a lady in our church who made giant, melt-in-your-mouth chocolate chip cookies. She had a special Tupperware container she’d put them in just for our family. There was just something about those cookies that made all of us feel so loved. When we saw her with the container, we knew it was going to be a good day!

Bake some cookies for someone who needs some extra love whether that’s your family, your neighbors, or someone at church. Everyone is sure to love these chocolate chip cookies! Here is her recipe:

Nestle Toll House Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients:

  • 2-1/4 cups all purpose flour

  • 1 tsp baking soda

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 cup (two sticks) butter, softened

  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar

  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 2 large eggs

  • 2 cups (12 oz bag) semi-sweet chocolate chips

 

Instructions:

  • Preheat oven to 375°F

  • In small bowl, combine flour, baking soda, and salt

  • In large bowl, beat butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar and vanilla extract until creamy.

  • Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition

  • Beat in flour mix gradually (Be careful not to over mix) 

  • Stir in morsels

  • Drop onto ungreased baking sheets by round tablespoons                                      

  • Bake for 9 to 11 minutes or until golden brown

  • Cool on baking sheet for 2 minutes

  • Makes 5 dozen cookies

Her Variations:

  • She doubles the recipe but only uses 1 bag of chocolate chips.

  • She uses margarine instead of butter.

  • She adds up to 1 extra cup of flour so she can increase the size of each cookie.

  • She makes the ball of cookie dough extra large. 

  • She stirs in a little extra love.❤️

Sinus Relief

It seems over the last few weeks where we live people are struggling more with seasonal allergies and the common cold. I came across this hint that has worked for me and I wanted to share it with you.

 

  • Purchase a group of live eucalyptus stems (ours came from Trader Joe’s and was very inexpensive but almost every grocery store sells them during the Fall months).

  • Wrap a rubber band around the stems and attach to your shower head.

  • Turn the shower on hot/warm and enjoy the natural fumes.

This will also add a pretty aesthetic to your bathroom shower. I pray this helps to clear allergies or relieve congestion.

By now, most women know about the “magic eraser.“ If you have never heard of it, it’s time for you to be introduced to the “magic“ behind this household cleaning tool.

Have you ever cleaned and maybe even scrubbed, especially in the kitchen or bathroom of your home and after all your hard work certain things still don’t look clean?

This is especially true for me when cleaning our “white” refrigerator as well as our tubs and toilets. These things seem to show the most whether or not they have been cleaned.

I’m all about tips to save time when cleaning. Here’s the best one I think I’ve found. It’s called the “Magic Eraser.” It’s a piece of white foam that works best when wet although it can also be used when dry.

You will not believe the difference it makes in cleaning the grime off your shower and tub and tough stains left on countertops and surfaces. It even removes those miscellaneous stains caused by family members who think making a mess isn't a big deal.

With any cleaner, you should always test an inconspicuous area of what you want to clean to be sure it won’t be scratched or ruined, but for most surfaces the magic eraser is safe. (Disclaimer: Read and follow all directions from the manufacture before using a cleaning product.)


The main surfaces never to use the eraser would be:

  • A car’s exterior (the microfiber beads similar to sandpaper in the magic eraser can scratch the paint of a car)

  • Marble or granite (sometimes the shine is taken off by the scrubbing)

  • Stainless steel

  • Non-stick pots and pans


There are 100’s of uses for the Magic Eraser. Here are some of my favorites and definitely my go-to’s:

  • Tub and shower tile

  • Rings inside toilet bowl

  • Handles of a non-stainless steel refrigerator

  • Caked-on stains and messes inside refrigerator

  • Formica countertops

  • Kitchen sink (rub very gently)

  • Inside crockpot basin

  • Marker or crayon markings

  • Spots not removed by normal cleaning products

  • Sticky residue

  • Spots on walls

  • Baseboards, chair rails, door frames

  • Hairspray residue on curling irons and straighteners


Get a magic eraser as soon as possible and you will be amazed at not only how well it works but how much time and energy it saves you on the tedious household chores of life.

Cleaning products like the magic eraser removes stains, seemingly impossible to clean, and makes things we clean look as good as new. It definitely reminds me of how Jesus erases our sin that we can not clean well enough to go to Heaven. He washes the stains with His own blood leaving our souls as white as snow and better than new.

Easy & Quick One-Dish Chicken Dinner

​Ingredients:

  • 3 Chicken Breasts (Can Be Frozen)

  • 2 Packages Fresh or Frozen Vegetables of Your Choice

  • 6 Red Skin Potatoes (Cubed)

  • 1 Stick Butter or Margarine (Melted)

  • 1 Package Zesty Italian Dressing Mix

Directions:

  • Use 9x13 Pan (Do Not Grease)

  • Put Chicken, Vegetables, and Potatoes in Rows (Chicken Should be Placed in Middle Row)

  • Pour Dressing Mix Evenly Over Dish

  • Pour Melted Butter/Margarine Evenly Over Dish

  • Bake at 350° for about 1 Hour

Shiny Sink 101

  1. Fill 1 side of sink with hot water 

  2. Pour in 1 cup of bleach

  3. Let sit 1 hour 

  4. Let out water with tongs

  5. Clean with comet

  6. Rinse well!

  7. Spray with windex

  8. Wipe with paper towel

  9. Clean around edges with floss or a knife

  10. Repeat on other side
